Cookie notice

Last updated 19 September 2026

What this site stores in your browser, why, and the one cookie we ask your permission for.

The short version

The site needs a few small pieces of storage to work: your cart, your currency, and your cookie choice. With your permission, and only then, it also uses a Google Ads cookie to see which of our ads lead to orders. Our visitor statistics use no cookies at all. Nothing here is used to show you personalised adverts, and we do not use analytics that profile you across other websites.

Cookies we ask your permission for

Google Ads conversion measurement

When we advertise on Google, we want to know whether an advert led to an order, so we are not paying for adverts that do not work. If you choose Accept on the cookie banner, the site loads Google's tag, which sets cookies such as _gcl_au and, if you arrived from one of our adverts, _gcl_aw. They last up to 90 days.

When you complete an order, the tag tells Google that a sale happened, its value and our order reference, so Google can match it to the advert you clicked. It does not receive your name, address, email or what you bought. We have switched off ad personalisation, so this is not used to build an advertising profile of you.

If you choose Reject, or ignore the banner, Google's tag is never loaded and none of this happens. The site works in exactly the same way either way.

You can change your mind at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page. Google's use of this data is covered by Google's advertising policies.

Visitor statistics, with no cookies

We count visits and measure how quickly pages load, using Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights. Neither sets a cookie, neither stores anything in your browser, and neither follows you to other websites. What we see is aggregated: how many people visited a page, which site sent them, roughly which country, and how long pages took to appear. None of it identifies you, so there is nothing here to consent to or opt out of.

Storage the site needs to work

These are strictly necessary, so the law does not require us to ask first.

Your cart, in local storage

When you add an item to your cart, it is saved in your own browser using local storage under the key steelwood-cart. This is what lets your cart survive a page refresh. It stays on your device and is not sent to us until you start checkout.

Currency and region

sw_currency remembers which currency to show prices in, set from your country on your first visit or by the currency switcher. sw_region lets the site say where your order will be printed. Both last a year and contain only a short code such as GBP or GB.

Your cookie choice

sw_consent remembers whether you accepted or rejected the Google Ads cookie, so the banner does not ask again on every page. It lasts six months, after which you are asked again.

Stripe, during payment

When you continue to payment you are taken to Stripe's own hosted checkout page. Stripe sets cookies there that are strictly necessary for processing the transaction and for fraud prevention. Those cookies are set by Stripe on Stripe's domain and are governed by Stripe's own privacy policy, not this one.

Security and load balancing

Our host, Vercel, may set strictly necessary cookies to route requests and to protect the site from abuse. These do not track you across websites and cannot be used to identify you personally.

Managing browser storage

Every major browser lets you view and clear cookies and local storage, usually under privacy or site settings. Blocking storage for this site will stop your cart and currency being remembered, but the rest of the site will keep working.

If this changes

If we add any other non-essential cookie or tracking, we will ask for your consent first and update this page before doing so.
